Bakom The Famous Grouse finns en inspirerande story, precis som bakom många andra whiskysorter. 1896 skapar Matthew Gloag en whisky han kallar för Grouse Brand - och dottern Phillipa ritar en röd ripa som kom att bli en förlaga till den vi idag återfinner på etiketten. Redan 1898 är whiskyn så pass populär att Gloag väljer att addera "Famous" till titeln.

Därefter spinner det vidare med expandering och export inleds, dessutom satsar Highland Distillers mycket på marknadsföring - med en hel del idag ganska anmärkningsvärda annonser. Sedan dess har produceten bland annat designat om ripan ett otal gånger, sponsrat det skotska rugbylandslaget, lanserat en likör, öppnat ett "The Famous Grouse Experience"-center och nyligen även släppt en maltwhisky: "The Famous Grouse Malt".

I The Famous Grouse hittar vi bland annat maltwhisky från de egna destillerierna i Highlands, på Orkney och på Islay. Whiskyn frål olika regioner balanserar och förstärker varandra för att slutligen ge en mjuk, rund och medelrökig whisky. Faktum är att idag är The Famous Grouse den blended whisky som säljer mest på bolaget här i Sverige.
